Heritage Engineering And A Family’s Personal Story

Helderburg, the premier bespoke workshop dedicated to the intentional refinement of the classic Land Rover Defender, has introduced Arvon, a one-of-one D110 Soft-Top and a deeply personal commission crafted over 3,000 hours as a love letter to the Hamptons and open-air coastal drives.

The Arvon commission was born from a collaborative family vision, merging the husband’s passion for mechanical purity and vintage Porsches with the wife’s keen eye for aesthetic harmony and coastal lifestyle.

While the husband focused on the D110’s performance, selecting the torque-rich 2.8L engine and manual gearbox for a connected driving experience, the wife curated a cabin inspired by the soft morning light of the shore. Together, they worked with Helderburg to ensure the vehicle wasn’t just a machine, but a vessel for family memories, complete with four inward-facing rear benches designed specifically for beach runs with friends and children.

Arvon was developed using Helderburg’s proprietary powertrain architecture, featuring a 2.8L SV Performance Turbo Diesel engineered for sustained torque delivery, thermal stability and mechanical longevity. It is distinguished by a custom-mixed High Pearl Metallic Blue finish inspired by vintage Porsche palettes and a high-fidelity Focal Utopia audio system – all meticulously crafted to serve as an heirloom-grade evolution of the iconic British 4×4.

“Arvon is the result of a beautiful tug-of-war between performance and lifestyle,” said Paul Potratz, founder of Helderburg.

“The husband wanted the soul of a classic Porsche, something mechanical and rewarding to drive, while the wife wanted a refined sanctuary that felt at home in the Hamptons. My job was to weave those two worlds together into a singular D110 that feels unmistakably original yet provides a level of calmness and dependability that didn’t exist thirty years ago.”

Designed for the demanding landscapes of the American Northeast, Arvon features a bespoke cooling system specifically tuned for the gruelling heat of summer dunes. A custom-machined cylinder head and double-stack radiator allow the vehicle to idle indefinitely in direct coastal sunlight.

This engineering is designed to allow the Focal Utopia soundtrack to play and the onboard coolers to stay chilled for hours on end while parked on the sand. When it’s time to move, the 2.8L engine provides the massive, low-end torque required to traverse deep, soft sand with effortless grace.

To ensure safety matches this power, Helderburg equipped Arvon with a torque-calibrated braking architecture. Featuring enlarged callipers and stainless braided lines, the system is tuned to provide a firm, confident stop even in the softest terrain, ensuring the driver feels in total control when the ground beneath is anything but.

The interior is a study in tactile luxury, featuring high-wax content leathers in ‘Sand’ and ‘Winter White.’ These materials weren’t chosen just for their beauty, but for their ability to withstand the realities of coastal life. The high-wax finish naturally repels moisture and resists UV degradation, ensuring that seats stay dry after a swim and comfortable through shifting weather. This careful specification guarantees the interior maintains its ‘heirloom’ quality and beautiful life for generations to come.

“We built Arvon to be as comfortable on the sun-drenched dunes as it is on a frozen mountain pass,” Paul explained.

“Unlike most soft-top Defenders, Arvon was conceived as a true four-season truck. Whether it’s the integrated cylinder preheat system for sub-zero starts or the unique three-ply insulated soft top and thermal barriers that keep the cabin quiet and cool in July, every detail was finished with the intention of year-round use without compromise.”

The High Pearl Metallic Blue finish utilises a high concentration of pearl particles that respond dynamically to shifting light. The silhouette is further refined by a Puma bonnet and hand-cut bonnet louvres (a nod to the artisan traditions of Bentley and Aston Martin) while the front profile is anchored by a high-approach angle bumper housing an English-built Red Winch.

“Our process is selective because our work is personal,” Paul said.

“Arvon represents the highest expression of what happens when you unite heritage engineering with a family’s personal story. It is, quite simply, the benchmark for what a classic Defender can become.”
