Stepping Into The Heart of Barcelona

Two days at NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón showed us how the right hotel can transform a quick city break into a lasting memory.

There are few cities that welcome you quite like Barcelona. The energy of its streets, the architecture at every turn and the unmistakable Mediterranean light make each arrival nothing short of a celebration. Gothic towers rise beside modernist masterpieces, quiet courtyards open onto bustling avenues, and the city unfolds with a character that makes every turn feel like a discovery. It’s the kind of place where two days become an adventure — especially when paired with the right hotel.

From the first step into the NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón, we knew the next 48 hours were in safe hands. Located on the elegant Rambla de Catalunya — once the site of the famous Calderón Theatre — this five-star property blends tradition, design and modern luxury into an experience that lingers long after you’ve checked out.

Walking Into Something Wonderful

Entering the NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón feels like stepping into the very heart of the city. Its central location puts landmarks, boutiques and cafés right on your doorstep – ideal for anyone wanting to dive straight into Barcelona’s rhythm.

The building itself hints at local heritage, but what struck us most was the reception inside. Staff greeted us with warmth and ease, making check in feel less like admin and more like the beginning of something special. Our luggage was whisked away, and within minutes we were being shown to our quarters.

Soft Sheets to Smart Tech

Our lodgings were a sanctuary from the bustle of the city. It was the kind of setting that instantly makes you slow down and settle in. Clean lines, luxurious bedding and thoughtful details gave the space a sense of quiet indulgence. We especially liked the in-room Alexa system. Towels, music, dinner… all just a request away. Sadly, it battled to understand our questionable attempts at Spanish.

The hotel offers 255 accommodation options, from Superior to Premium and suites. Families can opt for connecting rooms, while those who want sweeping views should head to the upper floors. Whatever the choice, the balance of style, comfort and convenience makes it easy to unwind between city explorations.

Each room also comes equipped with everything you’d expect of a five-star stay: a work desk, flat-screen TV, Nespresso coffee machine and a well-appointed bathroom stocked with quality amenities. Large windows filled the space with natural light and in the evenings blackout curtains ensured uninterrupted rest.

Dinner, Drinks and a Dash of Decadence

Barcelona overflows with exceptional dining options, but our stay proved that one of the best tables in town was just downstairs. Restaurante Tablafina is a celebration of Spanish gastronomy, offering artisan cheeses, premium cold cuts, tapas and reimagined classics.

We dined on the terrace, with views overlooking the elegant boulevard. The setting was sophisticated yet welcoming, the service attentive but not overbearing and the décor stylish without pretence. The standout was the Wagyu beef paella – a luxurious twist on a Spanish classic that made us question every paella we’d had before.

Each spoonful was rich, perfectly seasoned and paired beautifully with grapes curated by sommelier David Robledo – whose expertise had us nodding as if we’d known all along.

Breakfast the next morning retained the high standard. The buffet offered fresh fruit, pastries, hot dishes and local specialities in a bright, airy space that encouraged lingering over coffee. It was the perfect start to another beautiful day in Barcelona.

Fitness, Fresh Air and Fabulous Views

During our stay, we explored more of the hotel’s amenities, and it quickly became clear why it appeals to both leisure and business travellers. The Eleven BCN rooftop bar and terrace on the 11th floor is a must. With its 360º views of Barcelona, inventive mixed drinks and lively yet refined atmosphere, it’s one of the city’s best meeting points.

Next to it, the rooftop pool and solarium provide a refreshing escape from the lively scene below. The fitness centre is well-equipped for anyone determined to keep up a routine. Admittedly, the pool was what won us over.

Business travellers are equally well catered for, with nine versatile meeting rooms, most with natural light, that can host everything from small gatherings to conferences of up to 250 people.

One of the subtler but most appreciated features was the Guest Relations team. Far from a formality, they were genuinely helpful, offering insider advice, booking restaurants and suggesting local experiences we might otherwise have missed. It was a reminder that great service is often the finest luxury of all.

Leaving With More Than Luggage

Our two nights passed quickly and, before we knew it, it was time to check out. The process was as seamless as our arrival, though far less welcome. Barcelona has a way of making every trip feel incomplete – and this hotel made the desire to stay even stronger.

Stepping one final time onto Rambla de Catalunya, we carried with us not just our luggage but the certainty that we’ll return. Two days gave us a taste of everything the hotel has to offer – enough to make us eager for more. And if we’re honest, we’re still thinking about that Wagyu beef paella.
